गन्धः सुवर्णे फलमिक्षुदण्डे
नाकरि पुष्पं खलु चन्दनस्य |
विद्वान्धनाढ्यश्च नृपश्चिरायुः
धातुः पुरा कोSपि न बुद्धिदोSभूत ||

भावार्थ - स्वर्ण में सुगन्ध क्यों नहीं होती है , ईख (गन्ना) के दण्ड
में फल क्यों नहीं लगते हैं .चन्दन के वृक्ष मे पुष्प क्यों नही खिलते
हैं, विद्वान व्यक्ति धनवान क्यों नहीं होते हैं, तथा राजा दीर्घायु क्यों
नहीं होते हैं ? इन सब का कारण सनातन काल से बडे बडे विद्वान भी
सचमुच नहीं जानते हैं |
(इस सुभाषित के माध्यम से परमेश्वर (प्रकृति )की सत्ता का गुणगान
किया गया है, जिस के सामने मानव भी एक क्षुद्र प्राणी है |)
Gandhah suvarne phalamikshudande .
Naakari pushpam khalu chandanasya.
Vidvaandhanaadhyashcha Nrupashchiraayuh.
Dhaatuh puraa kopi na buddhidobhoot.
Gandhah = smell. Suvarne = Gold. Phalam +
ikshudande. Phalam = fruits. Ikshudanda = the stem
or cane of Sugar cane, Na = not. Kari = produce.
Pushpam = flowers. Khalu =verily,truly. Chandanasya=
of the Sanydalwood tree. Vidvaan = a learned person.
Dhanaadhya = rich person. Cha = and. Nrupah = a
King. Chirayuh = long lived. Dhaatuh = the cause.
Puraa = long ago. Kopi = any one. Buddhido = learned
teacher. Abhoot =whatever has not happened.
i.e. Why there is no sweet smell in the Gold, no fruits
grow in a stem of sugar cane, flowers are not produced by
sandalwood trees, why are learned persons never rich, and
why kings do not enjoy a long lifespan ? Since long ago
the answer to all these questions is not known even to very
wise and learned persons.
(Through this Subhashita the author has indirectly praised the
power of God Almighty and the Nature before whom the Man
is also like an ordinary living being. )
