आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

अनन्त  शास्त्रं  बहुलाश्च  विद्या
                        स्वल्पश्च   कालो  बहुविघ्नता  च  |
यत्सारभूतं  तदुपासनीयां
                         हंसो  यथा  क्षीरमिवाम्बुमध्यात्    ||
                                       - चाणक्य नीति (१५/१० )

भावार्थ -   शास्त्रों  की संख्या  अनन्त है और विद्यायें  भी
विभिन्न  प्रकार की होती हैं |  इन सब को सीखने के लिये
हमारे पास समय की बहुत कमी है तथा विघ्न बाधायें भी बहुत
आती हैं |  ऐसी स्थिति में यही श्रेयस्कर है कि जो  भी विद्या
सर्वोत्तम हो उसी का चयन कर उसी को इस प्रकार सीखाना
चाहिये जिस प्रकार एक हंस जल  मिश्रित दूध से केवल दूध
को ही ग्रहण करता है |

(संस्कृत साहित्य में एक मान्यता है कि हंसों में दूध  ओर जल
के मिश्रण से दूध को अलग करने की क्षमता होती है जिसको
 'नीरक्षीर विवेक ' कहते हैं | इसी को एक उपमा के रूप में प्रयुक्त
कर यह प्रतिपादित किया गया है कि अपने सीमित समय का
सदुपयोग करने के लिये एक विद्यार्थी को अपने चयनित विषयों
पर ही ध्यान केन्द्रित करना चाहिये | )

Anant shaastram bahulaashcha vidyaa.
Svalpashcha kaalo  bahuvighnataa cha.
Yatsaarabhootam tadupaasaneeyam.
Hamso  yathaa  ksheeramivaambum  adhyaat.

Anant =infinite.   Shaastram = treatises on
various disciplines of learning.  Bahulaa +cha.
Bahulaa = numerous.  Cha = and.    Vidyaa =
disciplines of learning.     Swalpah+ cha,
Svalpah= very little,   Kaalo=  time.   Bahu=
many.   Vighnataa = obstacles.     Yat =  that.
Aadhaarabhootam = best.   Tat = that.
Upaasaneeyam = worth attending. Hamso =
a Swan,    Yathaa = for instance.    Ksheeram+
 iva +ambu+ madhyaat.  Ksheera = milk.    Iva =
like (for comparison)   Ambu =water. Madhyaat=
among.

i.e.    There are infinite treaties of learning as also
various disciplines of learning.   On the other hand
the time at our disposal is very limited and many
obstacles also come in the way.  Therefore, under
such circumstance we should  be very selective and
choose only the best subjects which are worth attending
and leave  the rest , ,just like a swan, who separates the
milk from a mixture of milk and water .

(In Sanskrit Literature there is a saying that Swans
have the capacity of separating milk from a mixture
of milk and water.  This has been used as a Simile
to emphasize the importance of being selective while
studying a subject just like a swan, as the time at our
disposal is very limited. )
