जीवन्तं मृतवन्मन्ये देहिनं धर्मवर्जितम् |
मृतो धर्मेण संयुक्तो दीर्घजीवी न संशयः ||
- चाणक्य नीति (१३/९ )
भावार्थ - मेरे विचार से धर्म का पालन न करने वाले प्राणी जीवित
होते हुए भी मृत प्राणी के समान होते हैं | यद्यपि धर्माचरण करने
वालों की भी अन्ततः मृत्यु हो जाती है , परन्तु इस बात में कोई
संशय नहीं है कि वे दीर्घजीवी होते हैं |
Jeevantam mrutavanmanye dehinam dharmavarjitam.
Mruto dharmena smyukto deerghajeevee na smshayah.
Jeevantam= life. Mrutavat+ manye. Mrutavat = like a
dead person. Manye = I think. Dehinam = living being.
Dharma= Religion Varjitam = without. Mruto = dead.
Dhermena = with Religion. Smyukto = associated with.
Deerghajeevee = long-lived. Na = no. Smshaya= doubt.
i.e. I think that those living beings who do not observe
religious austerity, although alive, are like the dead . Although
those who observe religious austerity also die , there is no doubt
that they are long-lived.
But it is not a chankya niti it subhashit on budhbhushnam
