आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

परैरुक्तगुणो  यस्तु  निर्गुणोSपि  गुणी  भवेत्  |
इन्द्रोSपि  लघुतां  याति  स्वयं  प्रख्यापितैर्गुणै: ||
                                    - चाणक्य नीति (१६/८)

भावार्थ -  यदि  अन्य लोग किसी  व्यक्ति  को गुणवान
कहते  हैं तो  वह व्यक्ति गुणहीन होते  हुए भी गुणवान
समझा जाता है | परन्तु  यदि कोई व्यक्ति स्वयं ही अपने
गुणों  का वर्णन करता  है तो चाहे  वह स्वयं  देवताओं का 
राजा  इन्द्र ही  क्यों हों वह अपनी गरिमा खो देता है  |

Parairuktaguno  yastu  nirgunopi  gunee  bhavet.
Indropi  laghutaa  yaati   svyam  prakhyaapitairgunaih.


Parairuktaguno =  Paraih +ukta+ guno.   Paraih = others.
Ukta = speak, say.    Guno = virtues.   Yastu = to whom,   
Nirgunopi=nirguno +api,   Nirguno = without any virtues.   
Api = even,    Gunee = virtuous.   Bhavet = becomes. 
Indropi = Indro +api.  Indro = name of the king of Gods.
Laghuta =want of dignity.      Yaati =acquires, achieves.
Svyam = himself.  Prakhyaapitairgunaih = prakhyapitaih +
gunaih.   Prakhyaapitaih = by naming himself.     Gunaih  =
virtues.

i.e.     If people treat someone as virtuous, in spite of his being
without any virtuous, he is treated as a virtuous person.  But
if someone declares himself as a virtuous person,  he loses his
dignity, even if he may be Indra , the king of Gods.
