यया बद्धा प्रधावन्ति मुक्तास्तिष्ठन्ति पङ्गुवत् ||
Aashaa balavatee rajanavipreetaa hi shrunkhalaa.
Yayaa baddhaa pradhaavanti muktaastishthanti pauguvat.
Aashaa = expectation, desire. Balvatee = powerful. Raajanvipareetaa = Rajan + vipreetaa.
Rajan = O king ! Vipareetaa = just opposite, on the contrary. Hi = surely. Yaya = to whom.
XShrunkhalaa = an iron chain. Baddhaa = bound. Pradhaavanti = run forth.
Muktaastisthanti = Mukta + tisthanti. Mukta =free, let loose. Tisthanti = stay.
Panguvat = like a lame person.
i.e. O king ! Desires and expectations are like an iron chain and strange and quite contrary are its effects on persons. Those who are bound by it run amok, whereas those who are let loose stay inactive like a lame person.
(In this Subhashit by comparing desires to a chain, the author has very nicely compared the consequences of its presence or absence in persons showing quite contrary and just opposite effect. Those who have desires to fulfil remain active ,whereas those who do not have any desires remain inactive, i.e. desires are the driving force among persons to remain active. If the desires are achievable and within reasonable limits then they are beneficial to persons, but uncontrolled and unethical desires cause the downfall of people and our scriptures have strictly forbidden such desires termed as 'Trushnaa" .)
