च्युता दन्ता: सिता केशाः दृष्टिरोधः पदे पदे |
पातसज्जमिमं देहं तृष्णा साध्वी न मुञ्चति ||
Chyutaa dantaah sitaa keshaah drushtirodhh pade pade.
paatasajjmimam deham trushnaa saadhvee na munchati.
Chyutaa = dropped, deprived of. Dantaa = teeth. Sitaa =white Keshaah = hairs.
Drushtirodhh = impaired vision , weak eyesight. Pade Pade = at every step.
Paatsajjmimam = paat + sajja+ imam. Paat =falling down. Sajja = dress, an armour. Imam= this.
Deham = human body. Trushna = excessive desire. Saadhvee = a faithful wife. Na = not.
Munchati = abandons,
i.e. Even if a person becomes toothless,his hairs turn white, his vision is impaired at every step and his entire body becomes like a discarded dress (broken armour), his obsessive desire does not leave him like a faithful wife, who never abandons her husband .
(The simile given in the above Subhashit, comparing 'Trushna' as a faithful wife of an aged and greedy person, shows the ingenuity of its author.)
