यथा चतुर्भिः कनकं परीक्ष्यते निघर्षच्छेदनतापताडनैः |
तथा चतुर्भिः पुरुषः परीक्ष्यते श्रुतेन शीलेन कुलेन कर्मणा ||
Yathaa chaturbhib kanakam pareekshyate nigharncchedanataaptaadane.
Tathaa chaturbhib purushh pareekshyate shruten sheelen kulen karmanaa.
Yatha = for instance, for example. Chaturbhih = four (ways) . Kanakam = Gold.
Pareekshyate = judged,examined. Nigharshccedanataapataadanai=Nigharsh+chedan+taap+taadan. Nigharsh= the process of rubbing. Chedan =splitting, piercing Taap = heating. Taadanai = by striking, hitting. Tathaa = in the same manner, similarly. Purushh = persons. Shruten = by following the tenets of Vedas and other scriptures. Sheelen = virtues. Kulen = by lineage of a noble family. Karmanaa = by performance, by the good deeds.
i.e. For instance, purity of Gold is examined in four ways, namely by rubbing it on a touch-stone, by splitting and piercing it, by heating it on fire and by beating it with a hammer. In the same manner a person is also judged in four ways, namely by his knowledge and observance of the tenets of Vedas and scriptures, by his virtues, by his noble lineage and by the good deeds performed by him.
