अप्रतिबुद्धे श्रोतरि वक्तुर्वाक्य प्रयाति वैफल्यम् |
नयनविहीने भर्तरि लावण्यमिवेह खञ्जनाक्षीणाम् ||
Apratibuddhe shrotari vakturvaakya prayaati vaikalyam.
nayanviheene bhartari laavanyamiveha khanjanaaksheenaam.
Apratibuddha = a foolish person. Shrotari = listeners. Vakturvaakya = vaktu +vakya.
Vaktu = spoken Vaakya = words, saying. Prayaati = causes, results in Vaiphalyam = futile, without any fruitful result.. Nayanviheen = nayan+ viheen. Nayan= eyes, Viheen = without. Nayanviheena = a blind person. Bhartari = husband. Lavanyamiveha = lavanya + iva +Iha. Lavanya = beauty, charm. Iva - like. Iha =that. Khanjanaaksheenaam = Khanjan + akshaeenaam . Khanjan = a wagtail bird known for its beautiful eyes. Aaksh = eyes.
Khanjanaaksheenaam = a beautiful woman having beautiful eyes like the bird called 'khanjan' .
i.e. Addressing foolish listeners sagaciously is a futile exercise and does not produce any fruitful result, just like a blind husband of a beautiful woman with sparkling eyes ( like a 'khanjan' bird ) is unable to appreciate her beauty,
Khanjanaaksheenaam = a beautiful woman having beautiful eyes like the bird called 'khanjan' .
i.e. Addressing foolish listeners sagaciously is a futile exercise and does not produce any fruitful result, just like a blind husband of a beautiful woman with sparkling eyes ( like a 'khanjan' bird ) is unable to appreciate her beauty,
(There is a proverb in Hindi echoing this sentiment in a rather crude way as - ' भैस के आगे बीन बजाय भैस खडी पगुराय' - 'Bhains ke aage been bajaya bhains khadee pagurai' i.e. playing a flute before a Buffalo does not charm it and it continues groaning.
