Today's Subhashita. (Discourse between Bheeshma and Yudhishthara. - (continued).

          (1)  Dvaavimau grasate bhoomih sarpo bilashayaaniva.
                 Raajaanam chaavirodhharam brahmanam chaapravaasinam.

           (2)  Tadetannarashaardoola hrudi tvam kartumarhasi.
                  Sandheyaanabhisandhatsva virodhyaanshcha virodhayah.

(1)  Dvavimou = both these two.     Grasate = swallows.      Bhoomih = the Earth.   Sarpo =snake.

       Raajaanam = Kings.    Chaaviroddhaar = cha+ aviroddhar.     Cha = also.

     Outlining various intricacies of diplomacy to Yudhishthira,  Bheeshma further says to Yudhishthira -

(1)       Just as a snake swallows rodents and lizards living inside a burrow or a hole, in the same manner  a
King who is hesitant to fight with another king attacking his kingdom and a Brahmin who avoids to immigrate
to other countries to acquire learning, both get annihilated by the Earth i.e. they die without any achievement and are forgotten.

(2)    Therefore, O illustrious King !   You should carefully learn this by heart that those Kings who are
friendly towards you and are suitable for making an alliance with them, you should do so. But if they are enemical towards you, then you should not hesitate to fight with them.
