Chaaturvarnasya dharmaashcha raksihtavyaa maheekshitaa
Dharmasankarrakshaa cha raagyaam dharmah sanaatanah.
Chaaturvarnasya = of the four caste divisions of the Society as per Hindu religion, namely Brahmin,
Kshatriya , Vaishya and Shoodra. Dharmaashch = of the Religion Rakshitavyaa = protected.
Maheekshitaa = Ruler of the kingdom. Dharmasankarrakshaa = Dharmasankar + rakshaa.
Dharmasankar = defiling of religion. Rakshaa = protection. Raagyaa = of the Kings.
Sanaatana = unending,forevr.
Continuing his discourse Bheeshma further says to Yudhishthira - " O ruler of the kingdom, you should protect the religions of all the four 'Varnas' , and it is also the foremost duty of a King to protect the religions of the citizens from being defiled."
( The underlying idea in the above Shloka is that a King should treat equally various religions being practised in his Kingdom, and should ensure that these religions are not defiled in any way. In other words people should have freedom to practise their own religion and respect the religion of others. This edict by Bheeshma to Yudhishthara is more relevant under the circumstances presently prevailing in India due to communal riots in different parts of the country on religious grounds.)
