उत्थानेनामृतं लब्धमुत्थानेनासुरा हताः |
उत्थानेन महेन्द्रेण श्रैष्ठ्यं प्राप्तं दिवीह च ||
उत्थानहीनो राजा हि बुद्धिमानापि नित्यशः |
प्रधर्षणीयः शत्रूणां भुजङ्ग इव निर्विषः ||
अर्थ - (1) देवराज इन्द्र ने उद्द्योग से ही अमृत प्राप्त किया था , उद्द्योग से ही असुरों का संहार किया था तथा उद्द्योग से ही इहलोक में श्रेष्ठता प्राप्त की थी |
(2) जो राजा उद्द्योगहीन होता है, वह् बुद्धिमान् होने पर भी विषहीन सर्प के समान सदैव शत्रुओं द्वारा परास्त होता रहाता है |

Amrutam = A nectar having the properties of making immortal any body who drinks it. According to Hindu mythology Gods and Demons jointly churned the ocean to bring out this nectar as also many other valuable things from the depth of ocean. This episode is known as "Samudra Manthan'" in Hindu Mythology.
Labdhamutthanenaasuraa = Labdh +utthaanena+ asuraa. Labdh = by getting. Asuraa = Demons, the adversaries of Gods. Mahendrena = by the Great Indra, king of Gods. Shreshthyam = superiority,
preeminence among.... Diveeha = Diva + iha. Diva =.Heaven, the abode of Gods.
Iha = this World. (2) Utthaanaheeno = devoid of entrepreneurship. Buddhimaan = Wise and learned.
Api = even. Nityashah = always. Pradharshaneeyah = open to being attacked and defeated.
Shatroonaam = by the enemies. Bhujang = a snake. Iva = like Nirvishah = without any poison.
Extolling the virtues of entrepreneurship, Bheeshma further says to Yudhishthira as under :-,
(1) Only due to his entrepreneurship, Indra -the King of Gods, was able to acquire "Amruta' and kill Demons, their adversaries, and also gain superiority in both the Heaven and the Earth.
(2) A King, who is not enterprising, no matter how much wise and learned he may be, is like a non-poisonous and harmless snake,and is always prone to be attacked and defeated by his enemies.
