अर्जितं स्वेन वीर्येण नान्यमाश्रित्य कंचन |
फलशाकमपि श्रेयो भोक्तुं ह्यकृपणं गृहे ||
अर्थ - प्रत्येक व्यक्ति को अपने प्रयत्न और पौरुष द्वारा अर्जित धन से जीवन निर्वाह् करना चाहिये न कि दूसरों के धन पर आश्रित हो कर | एक कंजूस या गरीब व्यक्ति के यहां भोजन के लिये आश्रित रहने से तो जंगली कन्दमूल फल खा कर गुजर करना श्रेयस्कर है |
Arjitam svena veeryena naanyamaashritya kaamchana.
Phalashaakmapi shreyo bhoktum hyakrupanam gruhe.
Arjitam = earned, acquired. Svena= one's own. Veeryena = efforts, valour, manliness.
Naanyamaashritya = Na + anya +aashritya. Na = not. Anya = others. Aashritya = dependence,
Kanchan = money, gold. Phalashaakmapi = phala +shaakam +api. Phala= fruits.
Shaak = vegetables. Api = even. Shreyo = creditable, preferable. Bhoktum = having meals.
Hyakrupanam = hi + krupanam. Hi = of course, surely. Krupanam = a miser, a poor man'
Gruhe = home, house.
i.e. It is better to earn a living with one's own effort rather than depending on others' monetary help.
Similarly it is preferable to subsist on ordinary vegetables and wild fruits rather than having meals at a miser's or a poor person's home.
