समुद्रमासाद्य भवत्यपेयाः ||
Gunaah gunagyeshu gunaah bhavanti.
Tey nirgunam praapya bhavanti doshaah.
Aasvaadya toyaah pravahanti nadyah.
Samudramaasaadya bhavatyapeyaah.
Gunaah = virtues, qualities. Gunagyeshu = virtuous persons. Bhavanti = become, reman.
Tey = they. Nirgunam = reference to persons without any virtues. Prapya = by getting or associating with. Doshaah = defects, faults, deficiencies. Aasvaadya = having good taste.
Toyaah = waters. Pravahanti = flow. Nadyah = rivers. Samudramasaadya = samudram +
aasaadya. Samudram = ocean. Asaadya = reaching. Bhavatyapeyaah = bhavati +apeyaah.
Bhavati = becomes. Apeyaah = unfit for drinking.
i.e. Virtues remain intact with knowledgeable and virtuous persons, but when they come in
contact with bad persons without any virtues they turn into defects. For example potable and sweet water flows in rivers, but when they merge in the ocean, the same water mixing with the brakish
water of the ocean it becomes unfit for drinking..
