अपूजितोSतिथिर्यस्य गृहाद्याति विनिःश्वसन् |
गच्छन्ति पितरस्तस्य विमुखाः सह दैवतैः ||
अर्थ - जिस गृहस्थ के घर से कोई अतिथि (मेहमान) उचित सम्मान न पा कर निःश्वास भर
कर पलायन करता है तो उसके पितर तथा देवता भी उससे विमुख (नाराज) हो जाते हैं |
(भारतीय समाज में अतिथि सम्मान का बडा अधिक महत्त्व है और "अतिथि देवो भवः" ऐसा कह
कर उसे देवताओं के समतुल्य माना गया है | कोई माननीय व्यक्ति यदि बिना पूर्व सूचना के यदि
घर में आता है तो उसे अतिथि कहते हैं और अतिथि का आदर और सत्कार करना एक कर्तव्य माना
जाता है | परिवार के पूर्वजों को पितर कहा जाता है और उन्हें देवताओं के समान पूजने की परंपरा है |
इस सुभाषित के द्वारा इसी परम्परा का पालन करने के लिये प्रेरित किया गया है | )
Apoojitotithiryasya gruhaadyaati vinihshvasan.
Gacchanti pitarastasya vimukhaah sah devataih.
Apoojitotithiryasya = apoojito+ atithih +yasya. Apoojito = not revered.
Atithih = an unannounced guest entitled to hospitality. Yasya= whose.
Gruhaadyaati =gruhaat + yaati. Gruhaat = in the home. Yaaati = goes.
Vinihshvasan = heaving a deep sigh i.e. deeply hurt by the disrespect
shown to him. Gacchanti = go. Pitarastasta = Pitarah +tasya.
Pitarah = ancestors. Tasya = his. Vimukha = disinclined or opposed.
Sah = together with. Devataih = Gods.
i.e. In a household if an unannounced guest entitled to proper hospitality is not given
due respect and leaves with a sigh of disgust, then its ancestors together with the Gods
become disinclined towards it.
( In the Indian Society giving proper and due respect to the guests of the household is
considered an important duty, and they are even equated as gods (Atithi Devo Bhava).
The ancestors of the household are also revered like Gods. Thus this Subhashita indirectly
exhorts the people to give due respect to their guests.)
