स्वभावो नोपदेशेन शक्यते कर्तुमन्यथा |
सुतप्तमपि पानीयं पुनर्गच्छति शीतताम् ||
अर्थ - अत्यधिक गरम जल या पेय पदार्थ (दूध आदि) जिस प्रकार थोडी देर के बाद पुनः
शीतल हो जाते हैं , उसी प्रकार किसी व्यक्ति के नैसर्गिक स्वभाव को उपदेश (या निर्देश) दे
कर बदलना सम्भव नहीं होता है |
(जल और अन्य पेय पदार्थों का तापमान सामान्य ही रहता है | यदि उन्हें गरम भी किया
जाय तो वे कुछ समय के बाद अपने स्वाभाविक तापमान को प्राप्त कर लेते हैं | इसी प्रक्रिया
के समान मनुष्य भी अपने सामान्य स्वभाव को उपदेश या निर्देश देने पर भी नहीं बदलता है
जिसे इस सुभाषित में एक सुन्दर उपमा के रूप में प्रयुक्त किया गया है | )
Svabhaavo nopadeshena shakyate kartumanyathaa.
Sutaptamapi paaneeyam punargacchati sheetataam
Svabhaavo = inherent nature. Nopadeshena = na + upadeshena.
Na = not. Upadeshena = preaching, advising. Shakyate = can be.
Kartumanyatthaa = kartum + anyathaa. Kartum = to do.
Anyathaa = otherwise. Sutaptamapi = sutaptam +api.
Sutaptam = much heated. Api = even. Paaaneeyam = a drink.
Punargacchati = punah +gacchati Punah = again
Gacchati = goes, becomes. Sheetataam = coolness.
i.e. Just as very hot water or a hot drink (tea or coffee) again achieves its normal cool
temperature after some time, similarly the inherent nature of people can not be changed
otherwise by preaching.
( The phenomenon of heated water again becoming cool after some time has been skillfully
used as a simile in this Subhashita to bring forth the point that the inherent nature of people
can not be changed by preaching.)
