अविदितगुणापि सुकवेर्भणितिः कर्णेषु किरति मधुधाराम् |
अनधिगतपरिमलाSपि हि हरते दृशं मालतीमाला ||
अर्थ - एक अनजाने पर सक्षम कवि का व्याख्यान भी निश्चय ही उसी प्रकार कर्णप्रिय (कानों में शहद
घोलने के समान ) होता है जिस प्रकार कि मालती पुष्पों की माला की सुन्दरता के प्रभाव को उस के
पुष्पों की सुगन्ध पहले ही हर लेती है |
( इस सुभाषित का तात्पर्य यह् है कि कवि की वाणी उसके व्यक्तित्व से भी अधिक प्रभावशाली होती
है, उसी प्रकार जैसे कि मालती के पुष्पों की सुगन्ध पहले प्रभावित करती है न कि उन पुष्पों की माला |)
Aviditagunaapi sukaverbhanatih karneshu kirati madhudhaaraam.
Anadhigatparimalaapi hi harate drusham maalateemaalaa.
Aviditagunaapi = avidit _gunaa +api. Avidit = unknown. Gunaa= quality, virtue.
Api = even. Sukaverbhanitih = Sukavaih +bhaniti. Sikavaih = of a virtuous poet.
Bhanitih = discourse, speech. Karneshu = in tghe ears. Kirati = pours.
Madhudhaaraam = a stream of honey. Anadhigat= not acquired. Parimala= fragrance.
Hi = surely. Harate = steals,deprives. Drusham = appearance, look.
Maalati = Jasmine flower, known for its fragrance. Maalaam = garland.
I.e. An unknown but competent poet's discourse is impressive and pleasing like a stream
of honey put in one's ears, in the same manner as the fragranceof Maalati flowers draws more
attention and appreciation and definitely deprives the garland made out of these flowers from
such attention.
(The idea behind this Subhashita is that the discourse of a poet is more powerful than his
personality, just like the scent of Maalati flowers, which is appreciated more than a garland
made out of the flowers.)
