Amitram kurute mitram mitra dveshti hinasti vah.
Mitraani tasya nashyanti amitram nashtameva cha.
Amitram = a person unfit for being a friend, not a friend.
Kurute = doing,making. Mitram = a friend. Dveshti = hate.
Hinasti = injures, harms. Vah = you. Mitraani = friends.
Nashyanti = destroyed, lost Nashtameva = nashta+ aiva.
Nashta = lost, destroyed Aiva cha = as also, really.
i.e. If a person befriends a person who is unfit for a friendship
( a mean and wicked person), then such a person will hate and
harm his existing friends. This will result in not only losing his
existing friends but also the friendship with that person .
( The purport behind this Subhashita is that one should choose his
friends judiciously. Friendship with a mean and wicked person
may result in termination of friendship with his existing friends
and the new friendship may also end in no time.)
