Today;s Subhashita..

अविवेकिन  भूपाले नश्यन्ति गुणिनो गुणाः |
हावभाव    पुरन्ध्रीणां  भर्तृरिव     नपुंसके     ||

अर्थ -      बुद्धिमत्ता और सही निर्णय करने की  क्षमता से विहीन एक
राजा के शासन काल में  विद्वान् और गुणी व्यक्तियों के गुण भी (उन्हें
उचित  संरक्षण प्राप्त न होने तथा शासन मे उनकी सहभागिता न होने के
कारण) व्यर्थ हो जाते है  क्योंकि ऐसे शासकों के हावभाव (व्यवहार) भी
निम्न स्तर की स्त्रियों और हिजडों के समान होते हैं |

( कला, साहित्य, संगीत तथा अन्य विधायें सही राज्याश्रय के होने पर
ही फलती फूलती  हैं | किसे देश के शासक यदि स्वयं संस्कार हीन  हों  तो
उसका दुष्प्रभाव पूरी प्रजा के  उपर  पडता है | इसी भावना को इस सुभाषित
में व्यक्त  किया गया है |)

Avivekina  bhoopale  nashyanti  guninoi gunaah.
Haavabhaava purandhreenaam  bhartareeva  napumsake.

Avivekin = a person lacking in wisdom and ability to take
dedcision, imprudence.    Bhoopale = a King or a Ruler.
Nashyanti =  disappear, are  lost.   Gunino = persons endowed
with good qualities.     Gunaah = qualities and virtues.
Haaavabhaava = gestures, behaviour.    Purandhreenaam =
women.    Bhartareeva = Bhartru+ iva.    Bhartru = master .
Iva = like.    Napumsake = eunuch, an impotent person.

i.e.     If the Ruler of a country is imprudent and does not have the
ability to take correct decisions, then even the learned  and virtuous
persons lose their virtues ( are ineffective due to lack of patronage
by the State), because the gestures and behaviour of such Ruler is
like that of lowly women and eunuchs.

(It is a well known fact that all fine arts need State patronage to
flourish and if the Ruler of a country is imprudent and uncultured
then even the intelligentsia is unable to contribute towards the
governance of the country.  This fact has been indirectly highlighted
in this Subhashita.)
