Today's Subhashita.

गौरवं प्राप्यते दानात्  न तु वित्तस्य सञ्चयात् |
स्थितिरुच्चैः पयोदानां पयोधिनामधः  स्थितः  ||

अर्थ -      धन संपत्ति को अच्छे उद्देश्य के हेतु  दान करने से ही
एक धनवान व्यक्ति समाज में आदर और प्रसंशा पाता  है न कि
उसका  सञ्च्य  मात्र करने से |  उदाहरणार्थ एक जल से भरा हुआ
बादल अपने जल को पृथ्वी पर वितरित करने के  कारण उसकी
स्थिति उच्च मानी जाती है न कि सागर की जो केवल जल का
मात्र संग्रहकर्ता  होने  के  कारण निम्न स्थिति का समझा जाता है |


 Gauravam praapyate daanaat na tu vittasya sanchayaat .
Sthitirucchaih paayodaanaam payodhinaamadh sthitah.

Gauravam = dignity, admiration.   Praapyate = achieved.
Daanaat = by giving away as charity.     Na = not,    Tu = but.
Vittasya =  wealth's    Sanchayaat = hoarding. accumulating.
Sthitirucchaih= sthitih + ucchaih.   Sthitih = rank, position.
Ucchaih = high, elevated.    Payodaanaam = rain clouds.
Payodhinaamadhh = payodhinaam+ adhh,   Adhh = below.
Sthitah = situated , ranked.    Payodhi = Ocean

i.e.         A rich person gets recognition and praise in the society
only by using his wealth for charitable purposes and not by
merely being a hoarder of wealth, just as a rain bearing cloud
which distributes water over the earth is ranked higher than the
ocean  which merely stores the water and is comparatively ranked
low in the eyes of the people.
