अहिं नृपं च शार्दूलं वृद्धं च बालकं तथा |
परश्वानं च मूर्खं च सप्त सुप्तान्न बोधयेत् || - महासुभषितसंग्रह - (4079)
अर्थ - सांप, राजा, शेर, वृद्ध व्यक्ति, बालक , किसी अनजान व्यक्ति का कुत्ता,
तथा मूर्ख व्यक्ति, इन सातों को यदि वे निद्रित अवस्था में हों तो उन्हें कभी भी जगाना
नहीं चाहिये |
(इन सातों का व्यवहार नींद से जागने के बाद अप्रत्याशित तथा हानिकार हो सकता है ,
अतः इन्हें नीद से न जगाना ही श्रेयस्कर है | )
Ahim nrupam cha shaardoolam vrudham cha balakam tathaa.
Parashvaanam cha moorkham cha sapta suptaanna bodhavet.
Ahim = a snake. Nruipam = a king. Cha = and. Shaardoolam = a lion.
Vruddham = an old man. Baalakam = a child. Parashvaanam = para +
shvaanam. Para = other's Shvaanam = a dog. Moorkham = a foolish
person. Sapta = seven. Suptaanna = suptaam + na. Supttaam = asleep.
Na = not. Bodhayet = cause to awaken, admonish , .
i.e. It is always advisable never to awaken these seven while they are asleep,
namely a snake, a king, a lion, an old man, a child, a dog of an unknown person,
and a foolish person.
(The way these seven will behave after they are awaken from sleep is unpredictable
and may even be harmful. )
