Today's Subhashita.

तावद्दीर्घं  नित्यकर्म  यावत्त्स्याद्द्रष्टमेलनंम्  |
तावत्संक्षिप्यते  सर्वं यावद्  द्रष्टा  न  विद्यते. || -सुभषितरत्नाकर

अर्थ -     तब  तक  लोग अपने नित्यकर्मों  (स्नान, पूजा आदि ) को विस्तार
पूर्वक  करते हैं जब तक कि उन्हें देखने वाले उपस्थित रहते हैं |  और यदि
उन्हें देखने वाले कोई नहीं होते हैं तो  फिर वे उन्हें  छोटा कर के कम   समय
में  ही निपटा देते हैं.|

( इस सुभाषित में पुजारियों तथा सामान्य जनों  की  उस मनोवृत्ति  पर
व्यंग्य  किया है जब वे  और लोगों को प्रभावित करने के लिये पूजा आदि के
अनुष्ठानों को विस्तार पूर्वक करते है और अन्य अवसरों पर जल्दी जल्दी
उन्हें निपटा देते है |  )

Taavaddergham nityakarmam yaavattsyaaddrashtamelanam.
Taavatsmkshipyate sarvam yaavad drashtaa na vidyate.

Taavaddeergham = taavat +deergham.    Taavat = until such time.
Deergham = for a long time.    Nityakarma = regular and necessary
morning rituals like bathing and doing religious rituals,
Yaavattsyaaddrashtamelanam =  Yaavat + tasyaat+drashtamelanam.
Yaavat = while.   Tasyaat = their.    Drushtsamelanam = visible to
the eyes of others.  Taavatsmkshipyate = taavat + smkshipyate.
Smkshipyate =  shortens.    Sarvm = all of them.    
Drushtaa = spectators..    Na = not.     Vidyate = exists, is there.

i.e.        Until such time there are spectators, people perform daily
religious rituals in detail.  But if there are no spectators then they
shorten them and  perform them in lesser time.

(This subhashita is a satire on priests and other devotees who try to
impress the spectators while performing the rituals, but shorten them
if there are no spectators.)
