Today's Subhashita.

कस्तूरी जायते कस्मात्को हन्ति करिणां शतम् |
किं कुर्यात्कातरो  युद्धे मृगात्सिंहः  पलायनम्    ||  सुभषितरत्नाकर

(उपर्युक्त श्लोक 'सुभषितरत्नाकर ' में 'अन्तर्लापिका' शीर्षक के
अन्तर्गत संकलित है |  अन्तर्लापिका का तात्पर्य यह है  कि उसमे
पूछी गयी  पहेली  का उत्तर उसी  में छिपा होता है, यद्यपि ऐसा
प्रथम दृष्ट्या विदित  नहीं होता है )

शाब्दिक अर्थ =    कस्तूरी कहां से प्राप्त होती है, कौन सैकडों  हाथियों का
शिकार करता है और एक डरपोक व्यक्ति युद्ध में क्या करता है  ? मृग से
सिंह् का  पलायन ?    परन्तु वास्तविक अर्थ श्लोक के अन्तिम तीन शब्दों में
छिपा  है , अर्थात  हिरण की नाभि से कस्तूरी नाम का सुगन्धित द्रव्य
प्राप्त होता है, सिंह्  हाथियों  का संहार करता है  और  कायर व्यक्ति युद्ध
से पलायन (भाग जाना) करता  है |

Kastoori jaayate kasmaatko hnti karinaam  shatam.
Kim kuryaatkataro  yuddhe  mrugatsimghh palaayanam.

Kastoori = Musk,a very sweet smelling substance produced in the navel
of a deer called Musk Deer found in the upper reaches of Himalayan
Mountains.    Jayate =  produced.   Kasmat - where.   Ko= who.
Hanti = kills.  Karinaam = elephants.    Shatam = hundreds.    Kim = what.
Kuryaatkaataro = Kuryaat + kaataro.    Kuryaat = does.    Kaatarro =
a  coward person,     Yuddhe = in a battle.      Mrugat = from deers.
Singh = a lion.    Palaayanam = running away.

(The above shloka is of the variety called 'Antarlaapika' , which is a
riddle, the answer of which is hidden in the shloka itself.  Outwardly
if the literal meaning of the words is taken it has no sense.)

Literal meaning -   Where is kastoori produced, who kills hundreds of
elephants and what a coward does in a battle, From deer the Lion runs
away ?   .
The answer is hidden in the last three words of the Shloka.. i.e  Musk is
 produced by the musk deer,  the lion kills the elephants and the coward
 runs away from the battlefield.
