Today's Subhashita;

पदस्थितस्य पद्मस्य मित्रे वरुण भास्करौ |
पदच्युतस्य  तस्येव  क्लेशदाहकरावुभौ   ||  - सुभषितरत्नाकर

अर्थ -   एक अच्छे स्थान  में ( जलपूर्ण सरोवर में)  खिले हुए )
कमल पुष्प के लिये  जल तथा सूर्य मित्र स्वरूप होते हैं , परन्तु
जब वह  पुष्प वहां से तोड लिया जाता है तो वे दोनों ही उसको
मुरझाने  और जलाने वाले हो जाते हैं |

(इस सुभाषित में एक कमल पुष्प की उपमा द्वारा यह तथ्य
प्रतिपादित किया गया है कि जब् तक उच्च पदस्थित व्यक्ति
अपने पद पर बने रहते है तब तक सभी उनके मित्र और सहायक
बने रहते हैं परन्तु पदच्युत होते ही वे ही लोग उन्हें हानि पहुंचाने
लगते हैं.|  यही भाव एक अन्य सुभाषित मे इस प्रकार व्यक्त
किया गया है कि  - "स्थानभ्रष्टा न शोभन्ते दन्ताः, केशाः नखाः
नराः "  अर्थात अपने स्थान से विलग हुए दांत, केश, नाखून और
व्यक्ति फिर शोभा  नहीं पाते  हैं |  )

 Padasthitasya padmasya mitre varuna bhaaskarau.
Padachyutasya tasyeva kleshadaahakaraavubhau,

 Padasthitasya = any body well placed.or enjoying a high post.  
Padmasya = of a lotus flower.      Mitre = friends.    Varuna =
God of water.   Bhaskarau = the Sun.  Padachyutasya = any one
removed from a prominent position.   Tasyeva = tasya +iva/
Tasya = his.    Iva = as, like.   Kleshadaahakaravubhau  =
klesha +daahakaaraa + ubhau.    Klesh = hardship, troublesome.
Daahakaara = causing burning (withering due to heat of Sun's
rays).   Ubhau =  both of them.

i.e.      So long a lotus flower is well placed (growing in a pond
or a lake  full of water) then 'Varuna' (water) and the Sun both
are friendly towards it. But no sooner the lotus flower is not in
that environment these very friends cause hardship and harm to
it and dry it up.

(The underlying idea behind this Subhashita is that so long a
person is in a prominent position, he gets all the attention and
support. But when he loses this position the same persons who
were earlier friendly and helpful to him tend to neglect him and
may even cause harm to him .)
