Today's Subhashita.

वरमुन्नतलाङ्गूलात्सदाधूननभीषणात्  |
सिंहात्पादप्रहारोSपि  न शृगालाSधिरोहणं || -  सुभषितरत्नाकर

अर्थ -      एक  सिंह के द्वारा  लात मारे  जाने पर यदि कोई
सियार चाहे  कितनी  ही  तीव्रता से अपनी सीधे तनी हुई और
फूली हुई  पूंछ को हिला ले इस से उसकी परिस्थिति में किसी
प्रकार की उन्नति नहीं  होती है  |

(प्रायः हिंस्र प्राणियों में यह् प्रवृत्ति होती है कि यदि उन पर कोई
आक्रमण होता है तो वे अपनी पूंछ  को सीधे तान कर बडे जोर से
हिला  कर प्रतिवाद करते हैं परन्तु  यह् अत्यन्त शक्तिशाली  शत्रु
के विपरीत सफल  नहीं  होता है |  यही स्थिति एक कमजोर व्यक्ति
की भी उसके शक्तिशाली शत्रु की तुलना में होती है | यही इस
सुभाषित का मन्तव्य है | )

Varamunnatalaangoolaatsadaadhoonanabheeshanaat.
Simhaatpaadaprahaaropi  na shrugaalaadhirohanam.

Varam = better.     Unnata = upright.    Laangoolaat = tail
Sadaa = always.    Dhoonana = shake, agitate.. Bheeshanaat =
in a terrifying manner.  Simhaat = by the Lion's.   Paadpraharo =
hitting by a kick.    Api = even.  Na = not    Shragaalaat = by a
jackal's.     Adhirohanam =raising of the status or the act of
mounting on any object.

i.e.     On being  kicked by a Lion , a jackal  may shake its erect
tail in a terrifying manner for its defence , but it does not result
in elevation of its status in any manner.

(Generally among carnivorous animals there is a tendency of puffing
up and violently shaking their erect tail in their defence, but this
does not result in an increase in their status in comparison to their
other powerful enemies. So is the case with mankind.  This is the
underlying  theme of this Subhashita.)
