अशठमलोभमजिह्वं त्यागिनमनुरागिणं विशेषज्ञम् |
यदि नाSSश्रयति वरं श्रीः श्रीरेव हि वञ्चिता तत्र || - सुभषितरत्नाकर
अर्थ - यदि धन और संपत्ति की अधिष्ठात्री देवी महालक्ष्मी सज्जन,
अलोभी , मितभाषी त्यागी , प्राणिमात्र से प्रेम करने वाले ,तथा विभिन्न
विषयों के विशेषज्ञ व्यक्तियों के यहां आश्रय नहीं लेती है तो ऐसी स्थिति
में स्वयं महालक्ष्मी ही सम्मान से वंचित होती है |
(यह् एक मान्यता है कि विद्वान्, सज्जन तथा परोपकारी व्यक्तियों
पर लक्ष्मी की कृपा नहीं होती है परन्तु वे समाज में बहुत सम्मानित होते
हैं. इस सुभाषित का तात्पर्य यह् है ऐसी स्थिति में स्वयं लक्ष्मी ही अपने
सम्मान से वंचित रह जाती है क्योंकि ऐसे महान् व्यक्तियों को धनवान
होने की कोई लालसा नहीं होती है | )
Ashathamalobhamajihvam tyaaaginamanuraaginam visheshagyam,
Yadi naashrayati varam shreeh shreereva hi vaanchitaa tatra.
Ashathamalobhamajihvam = Ashatham + alobham + ajihvam.
Ashatham = one who is not a crook.i.e. an honest and sincere person.
Alobhanam = not desiring. Ajihvam = not very talkative.
Tyaaginamanuraaginam = tyaaginam +anuraaginam. Tyaaginam =
a doner. Anuraaginam = impassioned. Visheshagyam = an expert.
Yadi = if. Naashrayati = na + aashrayati. Na = not. Aashrayati =
takes shelter, remains attached to. Varam = better. Shreeh = goddess
of wealth. Shreereva = shreeh + aiva. Aiva = really, already.
Hi = surely. Vanchitaa = deceived, deprived. Tatra = there.
i.e. If Lakshmi, t he goddess of wealth , does not take shelter at the
residence of a honest, sincere, contented,soft-spoken philanthropic, kind
person, expert in many disciplines, then in such a situation surely
goddess Lakshmi herself is deprived of being honoured.
( It is believed that noble and learned persons are generally not rich, i.e.
are not favoured by the goddess of riches. The author of this Subhashita
says that the loser in such a situation is the goddess herself by not
getting a shelter at such a person's residence.).,
