Today's Subhashita.

यदि रामा यदि च रमा यदि तनयो विनयगुणोपेतः  |

तनये  तनयोत्पत्तिः सुरवरनगरे  किमाधिक्यंम्     || -  सुभाषितरत्नाकर 

अर्थ -       यदि किसी व्यक्ति की पत्नी धन की अधिष्ठात्री देवी लक्ष्मी

के समान हो और पुत्र विनयी तथा अनेक गुणों से युक्त हो, तो ऐसे पुत्र 

का जन्म लेना क्या समस्त सुविधाओं वाले देवराज इन्द्र की नगरी स्वर्ग 

में निवास करने  से भी बढ कर नहीं  हैं ?   

( इस सुभाषित द्वारा यह्  तथ्य प्रतिपादित किया गया है कि सौम्य पत्नी

और विनम्र तथा गुणवान पुत्र (संतान) वाले  व्यक्ति का पारिवारिक जीवन 

स्वर्ग में निवास करने से भी अधिक सुखमय होता है )

Yadi raamaa yadi cha Ramaa yadi tanayo vinayagunopetah.

Tanaye tanayotpattih suravara-nagare  kimaadhikyam.

Yadi = if.    Raamaa = wife.    Cha = and.   Ramaa = Lakshmi, the

Goddess of wealth   Tanayo = son.      Vinayagunopetah = vinaya +

gunopeta.   Vinaya =  humility, humbleness.    Gunopeta = endowed 

with many qualities.    Tanaye = son's   Tanayotpattih = tanaya+utpattih.

Utpattih = birth.     Suravara = senior most among Gods. i.e. Indra.

Nagare = the city.   Suravaranagare =  Svarga,the capital city of Indra.

Kimaadhikyam = Kim +aadhikyam.    Kim = what ?    Aadhikyam =

abundance, better than.

i.e.     If the wife of a person is virtuous like Lakshmi, the goddess of 

wealth.. and his son is endowed with humility and many other qualities,

then by having such  a virtuous son being born, is it not bedtter than

living in 'Svarga' the capital city of  Indra, the king of Gods  ?

(The idea behind this Subhashita is that if the wife of a person is noble 

and his son  is polite and endowed with many virtues, then his family

life is far better and comfortable than living  in Heaven.)
