असम्भवं हेममृगस्य जन्मः तथापि रामो लुलुभे मृगाय |
प्रायः समापन्न विपत्तिकाले धियोSपि पुंसां मलिना भवन्ति ||
अर्थ - प्रायः देखा गया है कि विपत्ति के समय लोगों की बुद्धि भृष्ट
हो जाती है | इसी कारण राजा रामचन्द्र यह जानते हुए भी कि स्वर्णमृग
का जन्म होना असम्भव है वे उसे मारने का लालच कर बैठे |
(रामायण के सीता हरण प्रसंग का उदाहरण दे कर इस सुभाषित द्वारा
यह तथ्य प्रतिपादित किया गया है कि लोभ के वशीभूत हो कर लोग
असंम्भव बातों पर भी विश्वास कर लेते हैं और ठगे जाते हैं | )
Asambhavam Hema-mrugasya janmah tathaapi Raamo lulubhe mrugaaya.
Praayh samaapanna vipattikale dhiyopi pumsaam malinaa bhavanti.
Asambhavam = impossible. Hema = Gold. Mrugasya = Deer's.
Janmah = birth. Tathaapi = even then. Raamo = Lord Ram.
Lulubhe = very desirous, greedy, Mrugaaya = for the deer. Praayh =
generally. Samaapanna = arrival of. Vipattikaale = period of adversity
or misfortune. Dhiyopi = dhiyo + api. Dhiyo = mental attitude, intellect.
Api = even. Pumsaam = people. Malinaa = tarnished, foul, dirty.
Bhavanti = becomes.
i.e. It is generally seen that while passing through a period of adversity or
misfortune, people tend to lose their intellect and mental attitude. Due to
this even Lord Ram , knowing fully well that a golden deer is impossible
to be born , became a victim of greed .
(By giving a simile of an episode of the epic 'Ramayana' relating to the
abduction of the wife of Lord Ram by Ravana with the help of Maareecha,who
under the guise of a golden deer enticed Ram to hunt him., the author of the
Subhashita says that greed causes momentary cessation of intelligence among
people as a result of which they tend to believe in impossible happenings and
are thereby tricked and cheated.)
