Today's Subhashita.

आत्मनो  न  सहायार्थं  पिता  माता च तिष्ठति |
न  पुत्रदारा  न   जातिर्धर्मस्तिष्ठति  केवलं       ||  - महासुभषितसंग्रह (4577)

अर्थ  -   स्वयं अपने  ऊपर  पर विपत्ति आने के समय   न तो  माता पिता
और न ही स्त्री पुत्र  तथा अन्य  बिरादरी के लोग सहायता देने  के लिये
हमारे साथ  रहते हैं |  और ऐसे समय में केवल हमारा  धार्मिक आचरण ही  
(एक रक्षक के  रूप में) हमारे  साथ रहता है |
 
Aatmano na sahaayaartham pitaa maataa  cha tishthati .
Na putra daaraa na  jaatirdharmastishthati kevalam,

Aatmano =  self.      Na = not.    Sahaayaartham = for the purpose
of helping.     Pitaa = father.    Maataa =  mother.   Cha = and.
Tishthati =  stay, abide, endure.      Putra = son.    Daara = wife,
Jaatidharmastishthati = Jaati + dharmah + tishthati,      Jaatih =,,
(persons of ) one's own caste or family, lineage.        Dharmah=
religious austerity.  Kevalam = only.

i.e.       While facing very hard times, neither one's parents, wife
and son, nor his relatives endure with him , and in such a situation
only the religious austerity practised by him stays with him (to
protect him ).
