Today's Subhashita..

(Thursday 14th April 2016)

आत्मार्थं यः पशून्हत्यात्सोSवश्य नरकं व्रजेत् |
देवान्पितृसमभ्यर्च्य खादन्मांसं न दोषभाक् || - महासुभषितसंग्रह(4661)

अर्थ - जो भी व्यक्ति अपनी जीभ के स्वाद की पूर्ति के लिये
(मांसाहार के लिये ) पशुओं की हत्या करता है वह अवश्य नरक में
जायेगा | देवताओं तथा अपने पितरों की आराधना (पूजा) करने के
पश्चात मांस भक्षण करना क्या दोषपूर्ण कार्य नहीं है ?

(इस सुभाषित के माध्यम से धर्म के नाम पर पशुबलि की प्रथा
की निन्दा की गयी है |)

Aatmaartham yah pashoonhatyaatsovashya narakam vrajet.
Devaanprutyasamabhyarchya khaadanmaamsm na doshabhaak.

Aatmaartham = In one's interest. Yah = whosoever.
Pashoonhatyaasovashya = pashoon + hatyaat +so + avashya.
Pashoon = animals. Hatyaad = by killing . So = that person.
Avashya = certainly. Narakam = the Hell Vrajet = will go to.
Devaanpitrusamabhyarchya = devaan + pitru + samabhyarchya.
Devaan = gods. Pitru = ancestors. Samabhyarchya =
by worshiping. Khaadan = by eating. Maamsm = meat, flesh.
Doshabhaak = doing wrong.

i.e. Whosoever kills animals for the sake of satisfying his
taste buds (for eating meat)will surely go to the Hell. After
worshiping the Gods and our ancestors is it not wrong to eat
meat ?

(Through this Subhashita the author has condemned the killing
of animals for eating their flesh, sometimes in the garb of religious
rituals.)
