Today's Subhashita.

आत्मा यस्य वशे नास्ति  कुतस्तस्य परे जनाः  |
आत्मानं  वशमानीय  त्रैलोक्ये  वर्तते  वशे         ||  -  महासुभषितसंग्रह (४६५७)

अर्थ -     जिस व्यक्ति का स्वयं अपने ऊपर ही वश (नियन्त्रण )  नहीं हो वह्
भला अन्य व्यक्तियों को कैसे अपने वश मे कर सकता है ?  यदि किसी व्यक्ति
का अपने  ऊपर पूर्ण नियन्त्रण हो तो वह्  सारे संसार को अपने वश में कर सकता
है |
(इस सुभाषित में अतिशयोक्ति अलङ्कार के प्रयोग के  द्वारा यह्  तथ्य प्रतिपादित
किया गया है कि अन्य व्यक्तियों के ऊपर  नियन्त्रण करने से पूर्व किसी व्यक्ति
को पहले स्वयं अपनी मनोवृत्तियों को वश में करना आवश्यक  है | )

Atmaa yasya vashe naasti  kutastasya pare janaah.
Aatmanam vashamaaneeya trailokye vartate vashe.

Aatmaa = self.     Yasya = whose.   Vashe = under control, submissive.
Naasti = Na + asti.     Na = not.    Asti = is.    Kutastasya = kutah + tasya.
Kutah = from where ?   Tasya = his.   Pare = others.   Janaah = persons.
Aatmaanam = one;s own self.   Vashmaaneya = under full control.
Trailokye = the three worlds  i.e. .the Earth, the sky and regions under
the Earth.     Vartate = display., abide.

i.e.          How can a person have the power to control  other persons if he
does not have control over himself  ?   However, if he has full control over
his state of mind  the entire World  can be submissive towards him.

(By the use of  a hyperbole  the author of this Subhashita has emphasised
the fact that to have control over other  persons, one must have full control
over his state of mind.)
