Today's Subhashita.

आम्रं  छित्वा कुठारेण निम्बं परिचरेतु  यः |

यश्चैनं पयसा सिञ्चेनैवास्य  मधुरो भवेत् ||  =  महासुभषित सं ग्रह (5056)

अर्थ -     एक आम के वृक्ष को कुल्हाडी  से  काट कर उसके बदले  एक 

नींम के पेड को जो भी व्यक्ति पाल पोस कर बडा करता हो,  वह चाहे 

उस पेड को दूध से  कितना ही क्यों न सींच ले फिर भी उसमें मिठास  

उत्पन्न नहीं होगी |

 (नींम  का वृक्ष अपने पत्तियों और फलों की कडुवाहट  के  लिये तथा 

आम का पेड  अपने फलों की मिठास के  लिये प्रसिद्ध है | प्रकृति द्वारा 

प्रदत्त इस गुण/अवगुण को प्रयत्न कर के भी दूर  नहीं किया जा सकता 

है |  प्रकारान्त से इस सुभाषित का तात्पर्य यह है कि गलत कार्य करने से 

तथा कुसंगति में रहने का परिणाम बुरा ही  होता है | इसी आशय का एक 

कथन है कि - "बोया पेड बबूल  का तो  आम कहां  ते खाय "

Aamram chitvaa kuthaarena nimbm paricharetu  yahh.

Yaschainam payasaa simchennaivasya madhuro bhavet.

Aamram =  a mango tree.     Chitvaa = cutting.     Kuthaarena =

by an axe.     Nimbam =  a neem or nimba tree,    Paricharetu  =

attend to, bring up.    Yahh = whosoever.     Yashchaina = yahh+

cha + ainm.     Cha = and.    Ainm =  that.    Payasaa = with milk.

Sinchenaivaasya = sinchen+-naiva+asya.    Sinchen = watering.

Naiva = not .      Asya = of this.    Madhuro = sweet.   Bhavet =

 will happen.

i.e.       A person who cuts a Mango tree with an axe and in its place

nurtures a Neem tree, no matter how much he may irrigate it with

milk ,  the Neem tree will not develop sweetness in its products.

(The Mango tree is known for its sweet fruits, whereas a Neem tree

is known for the bitter taste of its leaves and fruits.  These qualities 

endowed to these trees by Nature can not be changed through 

outwardly upbringing..  Indirectly the purport of this Subhashita 

is that if one does wrong deeds and keeps the company of wicked

people, the end result is always bad.  There is another saying in

Hindi on this very theme which says that - "If one grows a Babool 

tree (a thorny tree) how can he expect to enjoy sweet mangoes  ?  )
