Aayam pashyanvyayam kurtaayaadalpataram vyayam.
Aayaabhave vyayam kuryaatkuberopi vinashyati,
Aayam = income. Pashyanvyayam = Pashyan +vyayam/
Pashyan = seeing. Vyayam = expenditure. Kuryaataadalpataram =
kuryaat + aayaat + alpataram. Kuryaat = do. Aayaat = compared
to the income. Alpataram = lesser., smaller. Aayaabhaave = Aaya +
abhaave. Abhaave = deficiency, absence. Kuryaatkuberopi +
Kuryaat +Kubero + api. Kuryaat = doing. Kubero = reference to
Kuber, the God of riches and the Treasurer of Gods. . Api = even.
Vinashyati = , come to naught.
i.e. One must incur expenditure after assessing his income, and
such expenditure must be lesser than the income. However if expenditure
is done in absence of any income or its deficiency, (what so say about
ordinary mortals) even Kuber the God of riches and the Treasurer of Gods
will come to naught.
(One of the main principles of Economics espousing that expenditure
must be done keeping in view the total income and should never exceed
the resources has been beautifully highlighted in the above Subhashita.)
