Today's Subhashita.

पतितोSपि राहुवदने तरणिर्बोधयति पद्मखण्डानि  |
भवति विपद्द्यपि महतामङ्गीकृत वस्तुनिर्वाहः    || - सुभाषितरत्नाकर

अर्थ -       महान और सज्जन व्यक्ति विपत्ति के समय पर भी
स्वयं अपने द्वारा ली हुई  जिम्मेवारी  को उसी  तरह निभाते  हैं
जिस तरह  सूर्य ग्रहण के समय राहु द्वारा ग्रस लिये जाने पर भी
सूर्य जल में उगे  हुए कमल पुष्पों के समूहों को विकसित करने की
अपनी जिम्मेवारी  पूरी तरह  निभाता  है  |
(कमल के पुष्प सूर्य के प्रकाश में ही खिलते हैं | इस तथ्य को  एक
उपमा के  रूप में प्रयुक्त कर इस सुभाषित में महान व्यक्तियों के
चरित्र की इस विशेषता को प्रतिपादित किया गया है कि वे विपत्ति
के समय भी अपनी जिम्मेवारी को निभाते हैं |)

Patitopi raahubadane taranirbodhayati padmakhandaani.
Bhavati vipaddyapi mahataamangeekruta vastunirvaahh.

Patitopi = patit +api.     Patito = fallen into.   Api =  even.
Raahuvadane=  Raahu + vadane.    Raahu ,   the imaginary
planet of Indiasn  Astronomy, also known as Dragon's head
in Western  Astronomy.    When due to planetary positions
an eclipse of Sun occurs,it is said that Rahu has devoured
the Sun.    Vadane = mouth.   Tarinirbodhayati = tarinih +
bodhayati.      Tatinih = the Sun.     Bodhayati =  continues
to wake up (bloosom),  Padmakhandaani = a cluster of lotus
flowers..   Bhavati = happens.     Vipadyapi = vipat +api.
Vipad=  adversity, misfortune.   Mahatamangeekruta =
mahataam + angeekruta.     Mahataam = great and noble
persons.     Angeekruta = undertaken.      Vastunirvaahh =
vastu + nirvaahah.     Vastu =   natural disposition.  
Nirvaahh = carrying on.

i.e.       Great and noble persons carry on with the onerous
tasks voluntarily undertaken by them even while facing an
adversity in the same manner as the Sun does  by making a
cluster of lotus flowers to blossom while being devoured
by 'Rahu' during a solar eclipse.

(In this Subhashita the phenomenon of Solar eclipse has been
used as a metaphor to highlight the sterling quality of noble
and great persons in fulfilling their responsibilities even
while facing adversities.)
