अदृष्टपूर्वा बहवः सहायाः सर्वे पदस्थस्य भवन्ति वश्याः |
अर्थाद्विहीनस्य पदच्युतस्य भवन्ति काले स्वजनोऽपि शत्रुः ||
अर्थ - यदि कोई व्यक्ति किसी महत्त्वपूर्ण पद पर नियुक्त होता है तो
अनेक अनजान व्यक्ति भी उसके सहायक तथा वश मे हो जाते हैं |
परन्तु यदि कोई व्यक्ति धनहीन तथा पदच्युत (उच्च पद से हटाया हुआ)
हो तो ऐसे समय में उसके निकट सम्बन्धी भी उसके शत्रु हो जाते हैं |
(एक अन्य सुभाषित में भी कहा गया है कि -"स्थानभृष्टा न शोभन्ते
दन्ताः केशाः नखाः नराः " अर्थात् अपने निर्धारित स्थान से एक बार
च्युत होने पर दांत , केश (सिर के बाल), नाखून तथा मनुष्य फिर शोभित
नहीं रहते हैं | )
Adrushtapoorvaa vahavah sahaayaah. Sarve padasthasya bhavanti vashyaah,
Arthaadviheenasya padachyutasyaBhavanti kale svajanopi shatruh.
Adrushtapoorvaa = never seen before. bahavah = many.
Sahaayaah = helpers, followers. Sarve = every one.
Padasthasya = a person occupying an important post.
Bhavanti = bercome. Vashyaa h = under control, obedient.
dutiful. Arthaadviheenasya = Arthaat + vihenasya.
Arthaat = of wealth. Viheenasya = deprived of,
Padachyutasya = a person fallen from an eminent position
or post. Kale = at the time. Svajanopi = svajano+api.
Svajano = close relatives. Api = even. Shatruh = enemies.
i,e, If a person occupies a prominent post even strangers and other
persons become helpful and obedient to him. However if a person is
dprived of wealth and has been removed from a prominent post, even
his own close relatives become his enemies.
(In yet another Subhashita it is said that once the teeth, hairs, finger nails
and men are dislodged from their position they lose all their sheen and
become useless.)
