Today's Subhashita.

आशा धृतिं हन्ति  समृद्धिमन्तकः क्रोधः श्रियं हन्ति यशः कदर्यता |
अपालनं हन्ति पशूंश्च  राजन्न एकः क्रुद्धो ब्राह्मणो हन्ति  राष्ट्रं    ||
                                                         -महासुभषितसंग्रह (5427)

भावार्थ -   हे राजन  !   (अत्यधिक) आशावादी होने से मनुष्य का
आत्मविश्वास, पराक्रम तथा समृद्धि  नष्ट हो जाती  है | क्रोध करने से
प्रसन्नता, तथा कृपणता (कंजूसी) से यश नष्ट हो जाता है.|  सही देख-रेख
न होने से पालतू पशु नष्ट  हो   जाते है तथा यदि कोई विद्वान्  ब्राह्मण
(सही व्यवहार न होने के कारण ) क्रुद्ध हो जाता है तो फिर सारे राष्ट्र का
नाश हो जाता है |
( पुराणों में कई प्रसंग ऐसे  हैं जब किसी राजा के दुर्व्यवहार् से क्रुद्ध हो कर
या अन्य कारण से ब्राह्मणों  द्वारा शाप  दिये  जाने से उसका सारा राज्य
नष्ट  हो गया | वर्तमान संदर्भ में अंग्रेजों द्वारा नेपाल के राज्य का विखन्डन
इस का ताजा  उदाहरण है |  नेपाल का शासन पहले पूरे उत्तराखण्ड  और
हिमाचल प्रदेश तक फैला  हुआ था |  वे अत्यन्त क्रूर शासक थे | उनके शासन
से त्रस्त हो कर कुमाऊं  के राजा  के मंत्री  जोशी ब्राह्मणों  ने कूटनीतिक  पहल
कर अंग्रेजों को  नेपाल से  युद्ध करने  के  लिये  प्रेरित किया  जिस के फल
स्वरूप वर्तमान उत्तराखन्ड  नेपाली शासन से मुक्त  हो कर अंग्रेजों के
आधिपत्य में आ गया |   एक अन्य सुभाषित में भी कहा गया है कि -  "सराष्ट्रं
सप्रजं  हन्ति राजानां  मन्त्रविप्लवः " अर्थात यदि राजा अपने गुरुओं की
सही मन्त्राणा के अनुरूप कार्य नहीं करता है तो यह्  "मन्त्रविप्लव" सारे  राष्ट्र तथा
सारी प्रजा को नष्ट कर देता है |  भारत का विभाजन तथा काश्मीर समस्या जिसे
हम   आज तक  भुगत रहे हैं इसी "मन्त्रविप्लव" की देन  है  | )


Ashaa dhrutim hanti  samruddhimantakah  krodhh shriyam
hanti yashh kadaryataa.
Palalanam hanti pashoomshcha rajann ekah kruddho
brahmano hanti raashtram.

Ashaa = desire, hope.   Dhruti = courage, self-control.   Hanti =
destroys, kills.     Samruddhimantakah =samruddhim +antakah.
Samruddhim = prosperity. riches    Antakah = causing an end.
Krodhh =  anger.   Shriyam = happiness.     Yashh = fame.
Kadaryataa = miserly behaviour.    Apalaanam = not taking
due care.    Pashoomshcha = pashoom + cha.      Pashoom =
domestic animals.   Cha = and.     Rajanna =  O king !.    Ekah =
one.   Kruddho = angry.   Brahmano = a person belonging to
the first of the three twice-born  higher classes of Hindu society,
having the devine knowledge of 'Brahma' the Supreme God
Raashtram = the Kindgom, the Nation.

i.e.      O King !   (excessive) hope and desire destroys courage,
self-confidence and prosperity of a person.  Likewise  anger destroys
happiness,and miserly behaviour destroys  his fame.  If proper care is
not taken in the upkeep of domestic animals they too are destroyed,
and if a learned Brahmin is angered (by not giving due respect to him )
then it results in destruction of the entire Kingdom.

(Hindu Mythology is replete with instances of kingdoms being destroyed
by the curse or otherwise by angry Brahmins.  In modern times we
can quote the example of disintegration of the Kingdom of Nepal ,
whose rule extended up to Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. The
Nepalis were very cruel rulers and tortured their subjects. Fed up by all
this a Brahmin Minister of the rulers of Kumaon contacted the British
who were by then ruling all over North India and requested them to free
the people of Kumaon from the draconian Nepali Rule. His diplomatic
efforts were successful and the occupation by Nepal ended .).
