Today's Subhashita.

आशा  नाम  मनुष्याणां  काश्चिदाश्चर्यशृङ्खला  |
यया बद्धा प्रधावन्ति मुक्तास्तिष्ठन्ति  कुत्रचित्  || - महासुभषितसंग्रह (5429)

भावार्थ -       आशा नाम की एक अदृश्य जंजीर से बंधा हुआ मनुष्य का
जीवन आश्चर्यजनक रूप से प्रभावित होता है |   जो व्यक्ति इससे बंधे हुए
होते है  वे तो इधर उधर भागते  हुए  नजर आते है और जो व्यक्ति उसके
द्वारा बंधे हुए नहीं होते हैं वे कहीं  भी आराम से बैठे हुए  नजर  आते  हैं  |

( अधिक से अधिक पाने की आशा करने वाला व्यक्ति जितनी भागदौड
करता है उतना एक संतोषी व्यक्ति नहीं करता है |  सदैव  अतृप्त रहने
वाली इच्छओं  की  तुलना एक जंजीर से  कर इसके मानव पर पडने वाले
प्रभाव का तुलनात्मक  विश्लेषण इस सुभाषित में किया गया  है | )

Ashaa naama manushyaanaam kaashchidaashcharyashrunkhalaa.
ayaa baddhaa przadhaavanti muktaastishthanti kutrachit

Ashaa = hope, desire.    Name = by name.    Manushyaanaam =  among
men.  Kaashchidaashcharyashrunkhalaa = kaashchit + aashcharya  +
shrunkhalaa.      kashchit = any.     Ashcharya = surprise.   Shrunkhalaa =
a chain of.     Yayaa = by which.      Baddhaa =   bound, fastened.
Pradhaavanti = run amoc,  rush upon.    Muktaastishthanti =  muktaah +
tishthanti.      Muktaah = free.  Tishthanti = stay.   Kutrachit =somewhere.

i.e.       The life of people bound by the invisible chain of hope and
insatiable desire is affected in a very surprising manner.  Those who
are bound by this invisible chain run amok, but those who are not bound by
it are found to be relaxing  and well contented under any circumstance.

(Insatiable desired among men has been compared to an iron chain
in this Subhashita, the result of which is quite surprising  i.e. those
who are bound by it run amok and those who are not bound by it live a
contented life.)
