बुधाग्रे न गुणान् ब्रूयात् साधु वेत्ति यतः स्वयं |
मूर्खाग्रेऽपि च न ब्रूयादुत्प्रोक्तं न वेत्ति सः || संस्कृत सुभाषितानि
भावार्थ - सज्जन और विद्वान व्यक्तियों के सामने अपने गुणों का
बखान स्वयं नहीं करना चाहिये क्यों कि वे उनकी जानकारी में
अपने आप ही आ जाते हैं | एक मूर्ख व्यक्ति के सामने भी ऐसा
नहीं करना चाहिये क्योंकि बताने पर भी वह उनको समझ नहीं
सकता हैं |
(यह मानदण्ड आजकल विज्ञापनों के वर्चस्व के कारण अप्रभावी
हो गया है | अब तो तुलसीदास जी के कथनानुसार - "पण्डित सोइ
जो गाल बजावा " का जमाना आ गया है | )
Budhaagre na gunaan brooyaat saadhu vetti yatah svyam.
Moorkhaagrepi cha na brooyaat brooyaadutproktam na vetti sah.
Budhaagre = budha +agre. \\Budha = learned persons. \
Agre = in front of. Na = not. Gunaan = virtues.
Brooyaat = say, narrate. Saadhu = noble person.
Vetti = notices. Yatah = because. Svyam = himself.
Moorkhaagrepi = moorkhaagre + api. Moorkhaagre =
in front of a foolish person. Api = even. Cha = and.
Brooyaadutaproktam = brooyaat + utproktam .
Utproktam = on being told. Vetti = understand. Sah = he.
i.e. You should never narrate your virtues before noble and
learned persons, because they themselves will notice them.
You should also not do so before a foolish person, because he
will not be able to understand and appreciate them.
(The above doctrine no more holds good in the modern era of
advertisements, where 'blowing one's own trumpet ' is the general
rule for self-promotion. )
