Today's Subhashita.

त्यजेत् क्षुधार्ताः जननी स्वपुत्रं
खादेत् क्षुधार्ताः भुजगी स्वमण्डम्  |
वुभुक्षितः किं न  करोति पापं
 क्षीणा जनाः निष्करुणा भवन्ति    || चाणक्य नीति (संस्कृत सुभाषितानि )

भावार्थ -    भूख  से व्याकुल एक मां  (अपने प्राण बचाने के लिये ) अपने पुत्र
को भी त्याग देती  है , और एक  भूखी  सांपिन स्वयं अपने ही अण्डो को खा
जाती  है |  इसी लिये  कहा गया है कि एक भूखा व्यक्ति  कोई  भी पाप (निषिद्ध
कार्य) कर   सकता  है तथा  कमजोर व्यक्ति  भी ऐसी परिस्थिति में  निर्दय 
हो जाते हैं |

Tyajet kshudhaartaah jananee svaputram
 khaadet kshudhaarthaah bhujagee svamandam,
vubhukshitah kim na karoti paapam
ksheenaa janaah nishkarunaa bhavanti.

Tyajet = abandon, leave.    Kshudaartaah = afflicted  by hunger.
Jananee = mother.    Svaputram = one's own son.    Khaadet =
may eat.     Bhujagee = a female snake.  Svamandam = its own
eggs.    vubhukshnitah = a hungry person.  Kim = what ?    Na =
not.    Karoti = does.   Paapam = a sinful act.   Ksheenaa = weak.
Janaah = people.  Nishkarunaa= cruel, pitiless.  Bhavanti =become.

i.e.       In order to save her life a hungry mother even abandons her son,
and a female snake eats her own eggs.   That is why there is the saying
that a hungry person can commit any sin,  and in such a situation  even
weak  persons  become very cruel.
