Today's Subhashita.

खद्योतो द्योतते तावद्यावन्नोदयते  शशी |
उदिते तु सहस्रांशौ  न खद्योतो न चन्द्रमा   || - संस्कृत सुभाषितानि

भावार्थ -   जुगनू तभी तक चमकते  हैं जब तक  आकाश में
चन्द्रमा का उदय नहीं  होता है |  परन्तु सूर्य के आकाश में
उदय होने पर न तो जुगनू की चमक दिखाई  देती है  और न
ही चन्द्रमा की |

(इस  सुभाषित का तात्पर्य यह  है कि कम  प्रतिभावान् व्यक्ति
व्यक्ति समाज मे तभी तक आदर पाते हैं जब तक कि उनसे
अधिक प्रतिभावान्  व्यक्ति उपलब्ध नहीं  होते हैं | इसी आशय
की एक कहावत् भी प्रसिद्ध है कि - "अन्धों में काना राजा " |

Khadyota = A firefly which emits a fluorescent light in
the darkness      Dyotate = shines.   Taavadyavannodayate =
taavat + na +udayate.      Taavat = so long as.       Yaavat =
until.   Na = not.   Udayate = rises ( in the sky).    Shashi =
the Moon.      Udite = by the rising of          Tu =  but.
Sahasraansau= the Sun.    Chandrama =  the Moon.

i.e.    A firefly 'glows in the darkness until such time the Moon
does not rise in the sky.  But when the Sun rises neither the
glowing firefly nor the Moon exhibit their brightness.

( The idea behind this Subhashita is that less competent persons
get recognition only until such time   more competent persons
are not there and they lose their sheen on the arrival of more
competent persons.)
