आचारः प्रथमो धर्मः इत्येतद्विदुषां वचः |
तस्माद्र्रक्षेत् सदाचारं प्राणेभ्योSपि विशेषतः ||

भावार्थ - दूसरों के प्रति अच्छा आचरण करना हमारा सर्व प्रथम
धर्म (कर्तव्य) है, ऐसा विद्वज्ज्नों का कहना है | इस लिये हमें
सदाचार की रक्षा (अनुपालन) हमें अपने प्राणों से भी अधिक करनी
चाहिये |
Aprathamo dharmah ityetadvidushaam vachh.
Tasmadrakshet sadaachaaram praanebhyopi visheshatah.
Aachaarah = well established rules of good conduct.
Prathamo = foremost, first. Dharmah = religious austerity.
Ityetadvidushaam = iti +etat + vidushaam. Iti = it is.
Etat = this. Vidushaam = noble and learned persons.
Vachah = said. Tasmadrakshet = tasmaat +rakshethet.
Tasmat = therefore. Rakshet = should protect or guard.
Sadaachaaram = good conduct. Praanebhyopi = praanebhyo +
api. Api = even.. Praanebhyo = breath of life. Visheshatah =
especially.
i.e. Noble and learned persons have proclaimed that good
conduct towards others is our first and foremost religious duty.
Therefore, we should protect (adhere to ) our good conduct even
more than our life.
