असद्भिः शपथेनोक्तं जले लिखितमक्षरम् |
सद्भिस्तु लीलया प्रोक्तं शिलालिखितमक्षरम् || - संस्कृत सुभाषितानि
भावार्थ - असभ्य ( दुष्ट स्वभाव के) व्यक्तियों द्वारा किसी कार्य को
को करने के लिये ली गई शपथ जल में लिखे गये अक्षरों के समान
(अस्थायी) होती है ,अर्थात वे उसका अनुपालन नहीं करते है | इस के
विपरीत सभ्य (सज्जन और सत्यवादी ) व्यक्तियों के द्वारा हंसी मजाक
में भी कही हुई कोई बात एक शिला लेख के समान (स्थायी) होती है ,
अर्थात वे जो कहते है उसे अवश्य पूरा कर के दिखाते हैं |
Asadbhih shapathenoktam jale likhitamaksharam.
sadbhistu leelayaa proktam shilaalikhitamaksharam.
Asadbhih = people of evil temperament, Shapathenoktam =
shapathena + uktam. Shapathena = by swearing, under an oath,
Uktam = said. Jale = on water. Likhitamaksharam = likhitam +
aksharam. Likhitam = written Aksharam + words. Sadbhistu=
Sadbhih + tu. Sadbhih = upright and truthful persons. Tu = but.
Leelayaa = casually, playfully. Proktam = spoken, declared.
Shilaalikhitmaksharam= shila + likhitam + aksharam. Shilaa =
a slab of stone. Likhitam = written. Aksharam = words.
i.e. The commitments made by persons of evil temperament even
under oath are just like words written on the surface of water ( which
disappear immediately) and are not honoured by them. On the other
hand commitments made by upright and truthful persons even casually
are like the words engraved on a slab of stone (permanent) and are duly
honoured by them.
