मित्रं स्वच्छतया रिपुं नयबलैर्लुब्धं धनैरीश्वरं
कार्येण द्विजमादरेण युवतिं प्रेम्णा शमैर्बान्धवान् |
अत्युग्रं स्तुतिभिर्गुरुं प्रणतिभिर्मूर्खं कथाभिर्बुधं
विद्याभी रसिकं रसेन सकलं शीलेन कुर्याद्वशम् ||- (सभा तरंगः )
भावार्थ - मित्रों को निश्छल और प्रेम पूर्ण व्यवहार से ,,शत्रुओं को
नीतियुक्त व्यवहार से, लोभी व्यक्तियों को धन से, परमेश्वर को
परोपकार के द्वारा , युवतियों को प्रेमपूर्ण व्यवहार के द्वारा ,अपने
निकट संबन्धियों को मृदु और आदर युक्त व्यवहार के द्वारा, तथा
अत्यन्त क्रोधी व्यक्तियों को उसकी प्रशंसा के द्वारा, गुरुजनों को
आदर पूर्वक प्रणाम करने से, मूर्ख व्यक्तियों को शिक्षाप्रद कथाओं के
द्वारा ,विद्वान् व्यक्तिओं को विद्वत्तापूर्ण सम्भाषण द्वारा, तथा
रसिक जनों को उनके प्रिय विषयों पर चर्चा के द्वारा वश में (प्रसन्न)
किया जा सकता है | परन्तु इन सभी व्यक्तियों को यदि एक ही विधि
से यदि वश में किया जा सकता है तो वह है शील (पवित्र तथा सरल
आचरण) |

Kaaryena dvijamaadarena yuvatim premnaa shamairbaandhavaan,
Atyugram stutibhirgurum praanatibhirmoorkham kathaabhirbudham.
vidyaabhee rasikam rasena sakalam sheelena kuryaadvasham,
Mitram = friends. Svacchatayaa =through perfect transparency and
purity of heart. Ripum = enemies. Nayabalaih = through the
power of political wisdom. Lubdham = a greed person.. Dhanaih =
by the use of money. Ishvaram = the God. Kaaryena = good and
philantropic deeds, Dvijam = a Brahmin. Adarena = by showing
respect. Yuvatim = young women. Premnaa = through love or
affection. Shamaih = through gentle and respectful behaviour.
Baandhavaan = close relatives. Atyugram = a very angry person.
Stutibhih = through words of praise. Gurum = the teachers.
Pranatibhih = through obeisance and salutations. Moorkham = foolish
person. Kathaabhih = by telling imaginative stories. Budham =
learned persons. Vidyaabhee = through knowledge. Rasikam =
a connoisseur (person with a good taste and judgement of fine arts
and other good things in life.) Rasena = through indulgence in the
subjects of their liking. Sakalam = total, all, Sheelena =pious
and courteous behaviour. Kuryaat = do. Vasham = control.
i.e. We can control (win over) our friends through transparent and
courteous behaviour, our enemies through political wisdom, a greedy
person through money power, the God Almighty by doing virtuous and
philanthropic deeds, Brahmins by showing respect to them,young women
by extending love and affection towards them, our close relatives by
behaving with them gently and respectfully, a very angry person by
praising him, our teachers through obeisance and salutations , a foolish
person by telling him fables with moral teachings, learned persons by
engaging them in literary pursuits, connoisseurs of fine and good things
through indulgence in the subject of their liking, But if all these are to
be controlled by only one means, then it is the pious and courteous behaviour.
