Today's Subhashita.

उत्थानहीनो राजा हि  बुद्धिमानपि नित्यशः  |
धर्मणीयो  रिपूणां  स्याद्भुजंग  इव  निर्विषः  ||  - महासुभषितसंग्रह

भावार्थ -   एक  निष्क्रिय  और आलसी राजा चाहे वह् बुद्धिमान
और धार्मिक स्वभाव का भी  क्यों न हो अपने शत्रुओं  की दृष्टि में
सदैव एक विषहीन  सर्प के  समान होता है,अर्थात अपनी और अपने
राज्य  की  रक्षा  करने मे असमर्थ   होता  है |

Utthaanheeno  raja hi buddhimaanapi  nityashah,
Dharmaneeyo ripoonaam syaadbhujamga iva  nirvishah.

Utthaanaheena = inactive, lazy.   Raja  = a King, a Ruler. Hi =
surely.    Buddhimaanapi = budhimaan + api.    Buddhimaana=
intelligent.    Api - even.   Nityashah = always.  Dharmaneeyo=
righteous.   Ripoonaam = enemies.    Syaadbhujang = syaat  +
bhujang.     Syaat = perhaps.   Bhujang = a snake.    Iva = like.
Nirvishah =  not poisonous,

i.e.      A lazy and inactive King (or a Ruler) although he may be
intelligent and righteous in nature, is like a harmless and non-
poisonous snake in the eyes of his enemies and  is unable to protect
himself and his kingdom ..
