एकं वस्तुं द्विधा कर्तुं बहवः सन्ति धन्विनः |
धन्वी स मार एवैको द्वयोरैक्यं करोति यः || - महासुभषितसंग्रह
भावार्थ - किसी एक वस्तु को तीर चला कर उसके दो टुकडे तो
बहुत से धनुर्धर कर देते हैं , पर केवल कामदेव ही ऐसा धनुर्धर है
जो तीर चला कर दो व्यक्तियों को एकीकृत कर देता है |
(भारतीय वाङ्ग्मय में प्राणिमात्र में कामवासना को जागृत और
नियन्त्रित करने की शक्ति के देवता का नाम कामदेव है जो अपने
पुष्पों से बने धनुष से तीर चला कर स्त्री और पुरुषों के बीच आकर्षण
और कामवासना जागृत कर उन्हें एकीकृत कर देता है |इसी परिस्थिति
को काव्यात्मक रूप से इस सुभाषित में व्यक्त किया गया है | )
Ekam vastum dvidhaa kartum bahavah santi dhanvinah.
Dhanvee sa maar evaiko dvayoraikyam karoti yahh.
Ekam = one. Vastum = thing, object. Dvidhaa = divided
into two parts. Kartum = to do. Bahavah = many,
Santi = exist. Dhanvinah = archers. Dhanvee = archer.
Sa = he. Maar = the God Cupid. Evaiko = eva + eko.
eva = like. Eko - only one. Dvayoraikyam = dvayoh +
aikyam. Dvayoh = two. Aikyam = uniting as one.
Karoti = does. Yahh = who.
i.e. Archers who can split an object into two parts by
striking with an arrow are available aplenty, but an archer
who can unite two separate entities is the one and only
'Maar' the Cupid god, who is capable to unite two persons
into one entity as a couple.
( In Indian Mythology the God who controls the sexual urge
in all living beings is called 'Maar' or Kaamadeva ( Cupid in
Western Mythology). He is supposed to strikesboth the sexes
(male and female) by his bow and arrows made of flowers and
by arousing their sexual urge unites them into one entity. This
has been described figuratively in the above Subhashita.)
