कन्थां वहति दुर्बुद्धे गर्धभैरिव दुर्वहा |
शिखा यज्ञोपवीताभ्यां भारः कस्ते भविष्यति ||
-महासुभषितसंग्रह(८५६३)
भावार्थ - अरे मूर्ख ! जब तू एक गधे की तरह इन जीर्ण
और पैबन्द लगे हुए वस्त्रों का भार ढो रहा है तो यदि अपने
सिर में शिखा (चोटी) तथा गले में यज्ञोपवीत का भार भी
उठा लेगा तो तेरी क्या हानि हो जायेगी ?
(इस सुभाषित में उन व्यक्तियों के ऊपर व्यङ्ग्य किया गया
है जो भारतीय संस्कृति के प्रतीक चिह्नों शिखा तथा यज्ञोपवीत
को धारण नहीं करते हैं | वर्तमान समय में पुरोहितों को छोड कर
अधिकांश लोग इस नियम का पालन अब नही करते हैं | )
Kanthsaam vahati durbuddhe gardhabhairiva durvahaa.
Shikhaayagyopaveetaabhyaam bhaarah kaste bhavishyati.
Kanthaam = rags, patched garments. Vahati = bears,
carries on . Durbuddhe = O dull headed person.
Gardhabhairiva = gardhabhaih + iva. Dardhabhaih =
donkeys. Iva = like (for comparison) Durvahaa =
hard to bear. Shikhaayagyopaveetaabhyaam = shikhaa +
yagyopaveetaabhyaam. Shikhaa =a tuft or a lock of hairs
on the crown of the head. Yagyopaveetaabhyaam = and
the sacred thread worn worn by the three upper castes
known as twice born (Dvija) in Sanatan Dharma. Bhaarah=
load. Kaste = kahh + tey. Kahh = what. Tey = they.
Bhavishyati = will happen.
i.e. O dull headed person ! like a donkey bearing a big load,
when you can bear the load of these tattered and patched up
clothes, what harm will be done to you if you also wear the
sacred thread and keep a tuft of hairs on the crown of your
head ?
(This subhashita criticizes those persons who avoid wearing the
symbols of Sanatana Dharma in spite of being its followers.Now
a days excepting the priests most of the people do not wear these
symbols.)
