Kaakasya chanchuryadi hemayuktaa maanikya yuktau charanau cha tasya,
Ekaikapakshe gajaraajmuktaa tathaapi kaako na cha raajahamsah.
Kaakasya = a crow's Chanchuh = beak. Yadi = if. Hemayuktah =
covered with gold. Maanikya = gems. Yuktah = studded with,
Charanau = feet. Cha = and. Tasya = its. Eaikekapakshe. =
Eaikeka = each one. Pakshe = wings. Gajamauktikaa = pearls found
in the skull of an elephant. Tathaapi = even then. Kaako = crow.
Na = not. Cha = and. Raajhamsah = a swan. ( A swan is much liked
in Sanskrit literature, It is the mount of Goddess Sarasvati and is also
supposed to possess the power of separating milk from water.)
i.e. Even if the beak of a crow be covered with a foil of gold, its legs
be studded with jewels, and both its wings decorated with pearls found
in the skulls of elephants, the crow will still remain a crowe and can not
be equated with a magnificent Swan.
(The idea behind this Subhashita is that to become great one must have
basic inborn qualities. Merely by outwardly decoration one can not become
great.)
