आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

यदि  ते  तु  न तिष्ठेयुरुपायैः प्रथमैस्त्रिभिः  |
दण्डेनैव  प्रसहयै  तांश्छनकैर्वशमानयेत्     || - मनुस्मृति ७/१०८

भावार्थ -   यदि पहले बताये गये तीन उपायों ( साम , दाम और
दण्ड ) से भी शत्रु वशीभूत न हो तब् उस पर बलपूर्वक आक्रमण
कर के अपने दण्डबल  द्वारा वश में करने  का सतत प्रयत्न राजा
को करना चाहिये |
 ( उपर्युक्त श्लोक में युद्ध को अन्तिम उपाय कहा गया है और यह
निर्देश दिया गया है कि युद्ध तभी  करना चाहिये जब् अन्य उपाय
सफल न हों | )

Yadi tey  tu  na  tishtheyurupaayaih prathamaistribhih.
Dandenaiva prasahyai   taamsh  chanakairvashamaanayet..

Yadi = if    Tey = they (reference to the enemies of the King.
Tishtheyurupaayaih = tishtheyuh + upayeh.    Tishtheyuh =
kept quiet, controlled.   Upaayaih = remedies.  Prathamaistribhih
= prathamaih = earlier, prior.   Tribhih = three.    Dandenaiva  =
dandena + eva.    Dandena = by use of force,     Eva = really
Prasahyai =  to be conquered or resisted.   Vasham = submissive.
 under control. Anayet = bring.

i.e.      If the three measures mentioned earlier (negotiations,
use of money power and coercive methods) are not successful
in making the enemy submissive, then the King should attack
the enemy with full force  to conquer him.

(In the above Shloka waging a war has been advised as a last
resort when all other three methods are not fruitful.)
