आज का सुभाषित / Today' Subhashita.

सगुणैः सेवितोपान्तो विनतैः प्राप्तदर्शनः  |
नीचोSपि कूपः सत्पात्रैर्जीवनार्थं समाश्रितः || शार्ङ्गधर

भावार्थ -  यद्यपि  एक कुवां  बहुत गहरा होता है और झुक कर ही
उसके  जल के दर्शन होते हैं , लेकिन फिर भी वह गुणवान और योग्य
 व्यक्ति के जीवन की रक्षा करने के हेतु पानी पिलाने के लिये  सदैव
तत्पर रहता है |

(यह  सुभाषित भी 'कूपान्योक्ति ' शीर्षक से संकलित है क्यों  कि इस
में  एक कूप (कुंवां ) को प्रतिमान बनाया गया है | इस में 'सगुणैः'शब्द दो
अर्थों  में प्रयुक्त हुआ है  | पहला जिस व्यक्ति के पास रस्सी हो और दूसरा
अर्थ एक गुणवान व्यक्ति |  प्राचीन काल में पैदल यात्रा करने वाले व्यक्ति
'लोटा और डोर्री ' अपने साथ रखते थे ताकि प्यास लगने पर किसी कुंवे से
उनकी सहायता से पानी निकाल कर अपनी प्यास बुझा  सकें | अर्थात कुंवे से
पानी निकालने के लिये बुद्धिमानी नम्रता और साधन सभी आवश्यक होते हैं | )

Sagunaih sevito-paanto vinataih  praapt-darshanah.
Neechopi koopah satpaatrairjeevanaartham  samaashritah.

Sagunaih  = having a long cord., having virtues.   Sevito = serves.
Paanto =a drink.   Vinataih = by bending down.   Prapta = get.
Darshanah  = view.   Neechopi = neecho + api.    Neecho - deep,
inferior.  api = even.  Koopah =  a well.  Satpaatraih = worthy
recipients      Jeevanaartham = for the sake of protecting the life.
Samaashritah = endowed or provided with.

i.e.    Although a well is very deep and one can see it only by bending
down, it is still always committed to provide water to virtuous persons
and save their life.

(This Subhashita is also an 'anyokti' by using a Well as an allegory.  In
olden times travellers used to keep with them a long cord and a cup,
so that they could draw water from a Well to quench their thirst.  The
word 'sagunaih' in this shloka has two meanings namely (i) virtuous and
(ii)  having a long cord (and a cup), without the help of which they could
not draw water from a Well.  The underlying idea is that for taking out
water from a Well both intelligence and proper equipment are required.)
