आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita.

विषभारसहस्रेण  गर्वं  नाSSयाति   वासुकिः |
वृश्चिको बिन्दुमात्रेण ऊर्ध्वं वहति कण्टकम्  || - शार्ङ्गधर

भावार्थ -  एक बिच्छू की तुलना में वासुकि नाग में विष की
मात्रा यद्यपि एक हजार गुणा अधिक है फिर भी वासुकि नाग
इस पर कोई गर्व नहीं करता है , जब कि मात्र एक बूंद विष होने
पर भी  बिच्छू अपनी पूंछ को उठा कर अपने  दंश का प्रदर्शन
करता है |
(यह सुभाषित भी एक अन्योक्ति है और इस का वर्गीकरण एक
'संकीर्णान्योक्ति ' के रूप में  किया  गया है | लाक्षणिक रूप से इस
का तात्पार्य यह है कि महान व्यक्ति संपन्न होते हुए भी गर्व नहीं
करते है , जब कि दुष्ट  व्यक्ति थोडी ही संपत्ति होने पर इतरा जाते
है, जैसा कि तुलसीदास जी ने भी कहा  है  कि - "छुद्र नदी भरि चली
तोराई |  जस थोरेहुं  धन खल इतराई  ||"

Visha-bhaara-sahasrena   garvam   naayaati  Vaasukih.
Vrushchiko bindu-maatrena urdhvam vahati kantakam.

Visha = poison.   Bhaara = burden.   Sahasrena = one
thousand times.   Garvam = pride.     Naaayaati = na +
aayaati.   Na = not.   Aayati = becomes.   Vaasukih =
name of  the king of serpents of Hindu mythology,also
known as Lord Shiva's snake.    Vrushchiko = scorpion.
Bindu = a drop.   Maatrena = just a.   Urdhvam = erect,
upright.    Vahati = exhibits.    Kantakam = sting at the
end of a scorpion's tail.

i.e.  Although the serpent Vasuki is a thousand times more
poisonous than a scorpion, it is not proud about it, whereas
an ordinary scorpion possessing just a drop of poison moves
around with its upright tail and the sting at its end.

(This Subhashita is also an 'Anyokti ' and has been categorised
as 'miscellaneous'.  The idea behind it is that noble  persons are
never proud of their wealth, whereas wicked and petty persons
become proud and indulge in vulgar display of their wealth.)
