आज का सुभाषित / Today's Subhashita..

अस्यां  सखे बधिरलोकनिवास भूमौ
किं कूजितेन किल कोकिल कोमलेन  |
एते हि दैवहतकास्तदभिन्नवर्ण
त्वां काकमेव कलयन्ति कलाSनभिज्ञा  ||- शार्ङ्गधर

भावार्थ -    अरी सखी कोकिला !  इस स्थान के निवासी तो बहरे लोग हैं |
तू इतनी मधुर ध्वनि से  क्यों  कुहू कुहू ध्वनि कर रही है ?  ये लोग तो
भाग्यहीन हैं और  इसी  कारण अलग ही  प्र्कृति के  ललित कलाओं (संगीत
साहित्य आदि )से  अनभिज्ञ हैं  और तुम्हारी मधुर कूक  और  कव्वे की कर्कश
कांव कांव उनके लिये  एक ही समान  है |

(यह सुभाषित 'कोकिलान्योति'  शीर्षक से संकलित है |  लाक्षणिक रूप से इस
का तात्पर्य यह है  कि साहित्य, संगीत और अन्य ललित कलाओं का प्रदर्शन
उनसे अनभिज्ञ व्यक्तियों के बीच में करना व्यर्थ होता है |  यही भावना कविवर
बिहारी के इस दोहे में भी बडी सुन्दरता से व्यक्त की गयी है :-
                 करि फुलेल को आचमन मीठो कहत सराहि  |
                  रे गन्धी मतिमन्द तू इत्र  दिखावत  काहि ||

Asyaam  sakhe  badhira-loka-nivaas  Bhoomau,
kim  koojitena  kila  kokila  komalena.
Ete hi  daivahatakaastdabhinna-varna .
tvaam  kaakameva  kalayanti  kalaanabhigyaa,

Asyaam =  this is.  Sakhe = O friend !   Badhira = deaf.
Loka = people.   Nivaasa = abode.   Bhoomau = land.
Kim = what, why.   Koojitena = tweets,   Kila = is it .
Kokilaa = cuckoo bird.   komalena = softly, gently.
Ete = these.   Hi = surely.  Daivahatakaastdabhinnavarna=
Daiva + hatakaah + tata + bhinna+ varna =  Daiva-destiny.
Hatakaah =hit by.    tata =that.  Bhinna = different.  Varna=
nature, colour.   Tvaaam = you.   Kaakameva = like a crow.
Kalayanti=utter a sound.  Kalaanabhigyaa = kala+anabhigyaa.
Kala = fine arts like music, poetry etc.   Anabhigya = ignorant

i.e.     O my friend Cuckoo bird !   This place is the abode of
deaf person, so why are you tweeting so sweetly ?  These are
ill-fated people of a different kind as also ignorant of  fine arts,
unable to differentiate between your sweet tweet and the harsh
voice of a crow.

 (This  Subhashita is also an "Anyokti" using a cuckoo bird as an
allegory. The idea behind it is that it is of no use to display fine
arts before ignorant and illiterate people, as they can not appreciate
their finer points.  There is a couplet of a Hindi poet by name Bihari,
which says that a trader selling perfumes went to a village and put
a sample of the perfume on the hands of a villager who simply licked
it and said that it tastes sweet.)
